Group Instruction

Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) has a long history and research base in its efficacy for teaching individuals with Autism in an early intervention setting. However, most of this research is based in an early intervention, 1:1 clinic based setting with only minimal research looking at the generalisation of these skills to a school setting. Beginning school is a big transition for any student; it takes time to settle in to learn routines and expectations. This transition is made even harder for an individual with Autism who has difficulties in social interaction, communication and adapting to new routines and environments. Here at Woodbury we often see first-hand the challenges students face transitioning from an early intervention ABA provider to a school setting. Even from the best early intervention provider the students ability to generalise these skills in a new setting, to perform these skills with a new teacher, in a new environment, with new distractions is difficult. Our aim is to provide students with the skills needed to successfully participate in a group setting. To bridge the gap between 1:1 early intervention and school participation by providing a few additional years of intensive ABA support within a group setting. In the absence of a formal curriculum for teaching group skills we have created our own group curriculum, derived from an accumulation of research based protocols and procedures, to teach the necessary skills to successfully participate and learn in a classroom setting. This course will provide attendees with an overview of our group curriculum, the process involved in selecting and refining appropriate targets. We will review the data which demonstrates the outcomes of the curriculum on the students who participated.  Attendees will leave the training with practical knowledge of the skills needed to successfully participate in a classroom setting. Discussion during the training will allow attendees to identify modifications and amendments which can be made to early intervention programs to support the transition to school. This course is aimed at early intervention providers, program supervisors and consultants. The course offers 1 type 2 CEU for Board Certified Behaviour Analysts who attend.
